Grayson LandCare Outreach Committee Objectives
- Prepare press releases and articles for local newspapers that inform citizens of our goals and activities and invite them to join in.
- Ensure that the Grayson LandCare website is accurate, current and interesting.
- Continually work to increase awareness of Grayson LandCare and its mission, through signage, participations in parades and festivals, etc.
- Arrange for speakers to local groups and schools upon request.
- Sponsor the annual Land Stewardship contest for high-school students in Grayson County and solicit prize money from local businesses
The annual Land Stewardship Contest is entering its fifth year and will be announced this fall, with a spring deadline for entry. This contest encourages students to explore real economic, environmental and social problems facing Grayson County and suggest innovative solutions that can work here. Contestants are invited to think creatively about how we can be good stewards of our land and still meet the triple bottom line of sustainability--being economically successful, protecting our environment, and promoting community involvement and well-being.
Contestants must write a project summary and also create a display for the final judging. Judges (a minimum of three) are selected from local schools and colleges, including Virginia Tech. They independently rate the written projects and the displays, then come to consensus on the top three students. These students are awarded prizes of $1,000, $500 and $250, with occasional honorable mentions receiving $50.
