Grayson LandCare Livestock Committee has several key objectives:
- Maximize the productivity and income from our livestock producers.
- Collaborate with USDA National Resource Conservation Service, Virginia Tech, Virginia Farm Bureau, Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to access the most up-to-date management information.
- Ensure that farming methods protect our resources and maintain environmental quality.
- Support collaboration in purchasing of inputs and marketing to increase farmer income.
- Develop a local brand respected for high quality and fair prices.
- Continually learn through on-the-ground projects to test theories and develop local knowledge.
The founding of Grayson Natural Foods, LLC, is a major initiative of Grayson LandCare, whereby a co-operative of farmers raise and market grass-fed beef to colleges, universities and upscale restaurants.
The next step is currently underway--a feasibility study for a regional abattoir where locally raised meats can be processed close to the farm and on the timetable needed by the farmer. Grant funds totaling $100,000 have been received from the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Virginia Tobacco Commission, and several consultants are now completing the surveys and studies required for siting and construction. |
"With appreciation of our past and awareness of our present, we can create a safe, sane future."
