~ Announcing ~
Fifth Annual
Land Stewardship Competition

Grayson LandCare, Inc., a local non-profit organization, is pleased to announce the fifth annual Land Stewardship Competition. Too often our youth graduate and leave Grayson County thinking our community doesn’t have any opportunities for them. This contest encourages students to explore real economic, environmental and social problems facing Grayson County and suggest innovative and sustainable solutions. Contestants are invited to think creatively about how we can be good stewards of our land and still meet the triple bottom line of sustainability―being economically successful, protecting our environment, and promoting community involvement and well-being.

Cash prizes will be awarded to first ($1000), second ($500), and third place ($250) winners. Up to five commendation prizes of $50 each may also be awarded. The competition is open to all students in grades 8 through 12 who are enrolled in a school in Grayson County (Grayson County Schools, Galax City Schools, Oak Hill Academy) or who are residents of Grayson County and are homeschooled. Students can enter individually or in teams of two to five persons. Entry forms and short summaries of projects are due March 1, 2012. The Fifth Annual Land Stewardship Fair, where students will present their projects for judging and prizes will be awarded, will be held April 7, 2012 at the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence, VA. Students can find out more about the competition and download entry forms and other information on the Grayson LandCare website.

Ruth Ross, competition coordinator, reports that last year’s first-place winner, Claire Gleason, researched raising alpacas as an environmentally benign means to earn income while providing high-quality wool to local artisans. Second place was a tie between Dylan & Kattie Isom, who showed how composting and the use of non-chemical pesticides can enhance production while improving soil quality.

The Land Stewardship Fair and Competition is supported by local businesses and individuals. Sponsors are currently being sought for this spring’s awards. Individuals and businesses in the community who would be interested in providing financial support for the competition (donations of any size are welcomed) are encouraged to contact Ross Ross, at 276-773-2757 or by email at ross@ls.net.

Donations can also be mailed to Grayson LandCare, PO Box 373, Independence, VA 24348. All sponsors will be acknowledged in press releases and announcements and will be listed in the program for the Land Stewardship Fair in May.

"With appreciation of our past and awareness of our present, we can create a safe, sane future."
