Grayson LandCare
Energy/Water Committee

The Energy Committee of Grayson LandCare has broad interests but focuses on the following objectives:

  • Educating ourselves about advances in alternative energy, both large and small-scale
  • Educating the community about ways to and about alternatives to fossil fuels.
  • Planning and coordinating a major event annually that brings together vendors, exhibitors and the public to raise awareness of energy issues and local solutions.
  • Working with local government to make Grayson County and the surrounding area attractive to energy-efficient businesses and alternative energy producers.
  • Working with local government and businesses to increase the amount of material that is recycled or re-used rather than landfilled.
  • Supporting the National Committee for the New River and its efforts to protect the health of the New River.
The Energy and Water Committee has focused primarily on alternative energy and reduction of energy usage in the past few years. The annual Save Green Expo brings together regional businesses that promote environmental accountability; local individuals and groups with an environmental or energy focus; and expert presenters who can inform the community of the many possibilities before us and what others are doing.

There is a strong need in both Grayson County and Galax for convenient recycling, and we are learning about the barriers and looking for opportunities to address this issue. We are also optimistic about a potential business coming into our area that could convert our massive supply of wood waste (now trucked away) into biodiesel. Our work also overlaps with the Forestry Committee in the area of woody biomass and local projects pursuing ways to use it as fuel.

"With appreciation of our past and awareness of our present, we can create a safe, sane future."
